The marathon is a long-distance race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometres, usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory. Eliud Kipchoge was born on November 5th, 1984. He is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and the 5000 metres events. Kipchoge’s world record run at the 2018 Berlin Marathon broke the previous world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds. Almaz Ayana Eba was born on November 21th, 1991, she is an Ethiopian female long-distance runner who competes in the 3000 metres, 5000 metres, and 10,000 metres events.

She wins a gold medal in the 10,000 metres even at 2016 Summer Olympic in Rio de Janeiro, with a time of 29 minutes, 17 seconds and 45 milliseconds, which broke the record that was held for 23 years.

Galen Rupp is an American long-distance runner. He competed in the Summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London, and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. He won a silver medal in London and a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro.
